2.5-year ethnographic study of American teens' engagement with social network sites and the ways in which their participation supported and complicated three practices – self-presentation, peer sociality, and negotiating adult society.

My analysis centers on how social network sites can be understood as networked publics which are simultaneously (1) the space constructed through networked technologies and (2) the imagined community that emerges as a result of the intersection of people, technology, and practice. Networked publics support many of the same practices as unmediated publics, but their structural differences often inflect practices in unique ways. Four properties – persistence, searchability, replicability, and scalability – and three dynamics – invisible audiences, collapsed contexts, and the blurring of public and private – are examined and woven throughout the discussion.

לפני כשבוע גוגל הודיע על הפסקת שרותים מסוימים, ביניהם Notebook. במקום להסתפק בעוד שרות אשר לא תומך עברית לגמרי, יצרתי בעזרת וורדפרס כלי אשר עונה על הצרכים הבאים:

אפשרות לשמור לינק, ציטוט, והערות שלי אודות דפי אינטרנט ישירות מתוך הדפדפן;

אפשרות לארגן פוסטים אלה לפי קטגוריות ותגיות;

אפשרות לקבל הזנות RSS ל: בלוג כולו, תגיות נפרדות, קטגוריות נפרדות, כותבים.

I have since resigned from classroom teaching to explore and learn about emerging technologies ie. social media, social networking, virtual worlds etc. and find ways to leverage them in teaching/learning. In a different style of learning environment where students had access to OLPC type devices and were "encouraged" to collaborate with other students in social learning networks, I could see a "form" of IWB's becoming integral again. I see it more of an available tool in the learning space – up most of the time, filled with relevant rss feeds, blogs, pod/vidcast links that students could interact with …as needed.

Teachable Moment Twitter Account
Posted: January 19th, 2008, by Langwitches Following an idea that sprung out at me while I was writing my previous post, I have decided to create a Teachable Moment Shoutout account on Twitter.
The idea is as follows:
We are all looking to inspire and create teachable moments for our students. Many times these are impromptus, non-planned discussions and activities. Sometimes they pass as fast as they came, but will leave a long lasting impression on you and your students.
Our Twitter is relatively new for all of us and we are experimenting and experiencing what it dies for our own and for our students’ learning. Several ones of us have had a great experience with a twitter shoutout, followed by a Skype conversation, blog post and comments as well as direct “conversation” with 140 characters or less.

Please subscribe to Teachable Moment on Twitter if you are willing to commit yourself to be available, when your schedule permits, to help another teacher with a shoutout. Remember, that you might be someone’s partner from the other side of the world, which means it might not fall between your school hours, where you are with classes, paperwork or blocked access to twitter/skype. So don’t be shy and add yourself as a follower.
